Artificial Grass
A LITTLE BIT OF ARTIFICIAL GRASS
Ever wondered how it’s made? Artificial Grass is manufactured from small green and white plastic granules. The most popular plastics used during manufacturing are polyethylene and polypropylene. Nylon are used as an alternative polymer.
Synthetic Turf consists of one of these plastics or a combination of them. The plastic granules also contain additives like UV stabilizers and coloring agents.
ARTIFICIAL LAWN MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Heat will melt the plastic granules into a softer pliable material. The material will then pass through an extruding machine which forms strands. The extruded strands then pass through water which solidifies the blended material. While moving along pulleys, combs and rollers, the strands will be kept separated.
The separated strands are then slowly stretched whilst moving along the rollers. The appearance of the thinly stretched strands resembles the blades of natural grass.
The Artificial Grass is then shaped through a spinneret. The die hole of the spinneret determines the shape of the grass. As a result different die holes changes the cross section shape / profile of the yarn. Furthermore the yarn shape assists with the performance qualities of the yarn.
Various color strands are combined to form a multi-color synthetic yarn. This multi-colored yarn is then rolled onto larger spools.
The multi-colored yarn then moves through tubing to a tufting machine. This tufting machine operates like a big sewing machine. It stitches the yarn through the backing material. Simultaneously small knives cuts the looped yarn to the length required of the production run.
A layer of liquid adhesives or latex binders are applied to the backing material in order to secure the tufted yarn to the backing. The Fake Lawn then moves through a dryer to cure the coating. Passing through the dryer; hot pins will then burn holes through the backing material. As a result the punched holes assist with water drainage.
Main Fibre Types and their Characteristics
Fibrillated
Monofilament
Hybrid Yarn
The following factors contribute to the softness and density of the Fake Grass which provide a luxurious feel to the Synthetic Lawn. This will differ from one manufacturer to another:
- The raw materials used during the manufacturing process
- Amount of fibres used per square meter of Artificial Grass
- The row widths of the tufted yarn to the backing material
- The shape and size of the fibres
- Tufting methods used during the manufacturing process
Blades of the Artificial Lawn consist of different pile heights. Pile heights are more commonly referred to as the length of the fibres. The fibre lengths range from 8mm to 60mm.
Landscape and Leisure Artificial Grasses consist of various shades of green and brown fibres, fibrillated or monofilament fibres. As a result, these colors and textures resemble a realistic look and feel.
In contrast Sports Astroturf consists of fibrillated or either straight mono-colored green fibres.
