Types of Ceiling Boards

IsoBoards Thermal Insulation ceiling boards
  • IsoBoards is high in density and are extruded polystyrene rigid insulation boards with a 100% closed cell structure
  • IsoBoards has been used and tested internationally since 1970
  • IsoBoards are manufactured in South Africa since 1995, using a fully automated extrusion process, in accordance with international specifications and standards.
  • IsoBoards has three finishes available: Pine, edge beveled and tongue and groove finish
Advantages of IsoBoards thermal insulation ceiling boards:
  • IsoBoard insulation ceiling boards are used to prevent the transfer of heat through conduction and convection.
  • Insulated ceiling boards retards heat flow in summer and contain generated heat in winter.
  • IsoBoard ceiling boards are versatile boards that can easily be shaped and moulded to any design.
  • IsoBoards insulation can be used for cavity wall insulation which will prevent heat transfer and build-up to the inner leaf of sun exposed walls. Moisture within the cavity is prevented from condensing onto and penetrating through the inner leaf.
  • Insulated IsoBoards are used to thermally insulate existing buildings for comfort and energy efficiency. This will cut the cost of keeping a building cool is summer and warm in winter. An efficient thermal insulator.
  • IsoBoards are environmentally friendly, a green material, energy efficient and 100% recyclable reducing overall carbon footprint.
  • IsoBoards are resistant to damp and acts as a barrier against moisture, preventing harmful mold and mildew.
  • IsoBoards are resistant to spread of fire, posing a no flame –spread hazard. It contains flame retardant gasses within the cells which cause the board to self-extinguish and flames not to spread.
Considerations:

The IsoBoard material can easily be damaged if bumped.

Plasterboard Ceilings / RhinoBoard® Ceilings / Gypsym boards

Plasterboard ceiling boards are made from gypsum plaster and consist of an aerated / foamed core and firmly bonded to special paper linings. It is also commonly known as plasterboards, RhinoBoard® or gypsum boards.

Plasterboard ceiling boards are relatively inexpensive yet they can improve thermal and sound insulation of your home, office or factory rendering the structure more energy efficient.

Advantages of plasterboards:
  • Plasterboards are versatile boards that can easily be shaped and moulded to any design.
  • Plasterboard ceilings are easy to repair.
  • Affordable and readily available.
  • Plasterboards require additional insulation material for thermal and sound insulation.
  • Plasterboard ceilings are recyclable material, green material and environmentally friendly.
  • Plasterboard provides good fire protection due to the behavior of their gypsum content when exposed to fire. Pure gypsum contains approximately 21% chemically bonded water, when gypsum protected elements of a structure are exposed to fire, the chemically combined water is gradually released in the form of moisture vapour. If a sufficiently high temperature is maintained, eventually all of the crystallised water will be expelled.
Considerations:

  • Paper plasterboard will not tolerate flooding and will soften with water exposure.
  • Plasterboards are prone to cracks and breaks.
  • The installation of the plaster boards can be dusty especially in existing vacated areas
  • Skimming plaster required for finishing
  • Low thermal value
Fibre Cement board ceilings / Nutec® Ceiling boards

Nutec fibre cement products are manufactured using a mixture of cellulose fibre, cement, silica and water.

Advantages:

  • Green product using safe fibres.
  • Considerable tensile strength with enhanced dynamic load bearing properties.
  • Cost competitive.
  • Excellent thermal properties.
  • Water tight and wind resistant.
  • Hail resistant.
  • Fire-resistant.
  • Fungus and rodent resistant.
  • Acid resistant.
Considerations:

Fibre cement boards will have low thermal properties.

Cornices

Cornices serve an aesthetic / decorative function and are functional. Cornices close any open spaces or joints along walls, where the ceiling boards join with the wall and will hide any imperfections.

Cornices are moulded in varies sizes and shapes and will brighten up a room by deflecting light from dark corners. It also finishes off the ceiling boards and can make a room look bigger.

Modern cornices are typically made medium density fibreboard (MDF), plaster, paper covered plaster, gypsum, polyurethane, expanded polystyrene and timber. Cornices are lightweight and easy to handle. Cornices can be painted or spray painted which makes it easy to colour customise as desired.

Cornices will add the most beautiful finishing touches to any room to give a luxurious feel.
